Five-time champion Powers calls time on racing career

Nathaniel Powers, the most successful driver in Formula Virtual history, has confirmed his permanent retirement from competitive racing as he turns his attention to coaching, driver development and his son Theo’s blossoming career.

The five-time FV champion will head up the Downton Young Driver Academy (DYDA), taking on a role supporting and developing young drivers for the Downton FV Team.

Powers had already announced his intention to retire from FV at the end of 2024, before the season was cancelled. This announcement closes the door on a return to racing in any category, with his focus now firmly on helping the next generation.

He leaves behind an extraordinary record. His five championships—won in 2013, 2017, 2018, 2020 and 2021—remain the benchmark in Formula Virtual, with no other driver having claimed more than three.

Powers won the inaugural 2013 championship with Franklin before moving to Downton for the final race of that season. It was the beginning of an association that would define much of his career.

His years with Downton brought both difficult campaigns and exceptional success. After finishing 16th in the 2016 standings, Powers returned to win the championship in 2017 and successfully defended his crown in 2018. A third-place finish followed in 2019 before another pair of consecutive titles in 2020 and 2021 secured his place as the sport’s most decorated champion.

Later spells with Lucas V-Prix and Arnello Milner & Ronson Autosport preceded a return to Downton for 2024. Victory at the Australian season opener proved that his ability to win remained intact, even as he prepared to bring his FV career to a close.

Now, his priority is supporting Theo as he builds his own racing career. Stepping away from competition will allow Nathaniel to devote more time to that journey, sharing the experience of a career spent navigating both championship success and challenging seasons.

Alongside that family focus, his leadership of DYDA will give Downton’s young drivers access to the knowledge of an exceptional talent. His work will centre on helping them understand their performances, develop their racecraft and prepare for the demands of progressing through the sport.

For Powers, the next chapter keeps him closely connected to racing and to the team with which he won four of his five world titles. His own competitive career is complete; his influence on those still finding their way is set to continue.
